Women
On The Verge Of HRT |
 |
| The
Lowry Studio - (Thur 18th June) |
| Starring
Louise Jameson (Rosa di Marco, Eastenders) and Janet Dibley
(Deborah Johnson, The Chase). Best friends Vera and Anna
have a few things in common – being the 'wrong'
side of 40, husband troubles and a love of Irish singing
sensation Daniel O’Donnell to name but a few. During
a trip to Donegal to see their idol in concert, Vera and
Anna come face to face with the realities of their lives
– loveless marriages, husbands in the clutches of
mid-life crises, the menopause (or should that be ‘mental
pause’) and the prospect of being thrown on the
sexual scrap heap. Assisted by a handsome young waiter
(it helps that he looks like Daniel O’Donnell),
Vera and Anna confront their fears and begin to realise
that life doesn't have to end when HRT begins. Brought
to you by Marie Jones, writer of Stones in his Pockets
(The Lowry, April 2009), this hilarious, feisty and sometimes
painful look into the lives of two women on the verge.
There is a 2pm matinee on the Wednesday and Saturday. |

Desperate
To Be Doris |
 |
|
Library Theatre - (Wed 23rd Sep - Sat 3rd Oct) |
LipService
return to their spiritual home with a hilarious new
musical featuring the greatest hits of the incomparable
Doris Day. By day, Dean (Darren Southworth, fresh from
the West End production of Spamalot) works for a mail
order nightwear firm called The Pyjama Game. By night,
in the privacy of his own home, this living room legend
sings like Doris Day. When Dean’s local operatic
society, Out of My Range, stages Calamity Jane, will
he share his ‘Calamity Jane’ with an unsuspecting
world? Joining LipService’s Maggie Fox and Sue
Ryding for this Doris Day sing-fest will be a community
choir specially recruited for the Library Theatre, who
will regale the audience with Doris Day classics such
as ‘Secret Love’, ‘Que Sera, Sera’,
and ‘The Deadwood Stage’. *Desperate to
be Doris has not been authorised or approved in any
manner by anyone called Desperate’, or ‘Doris’,
or indeed Doris Day. Please note that the evening performances
on Friday's and Saturday's start at 8pm. There is a
3pm matinee on Saturdays and on Thursday 1st October. |

Dreams
Of Violence |
 |
|
Library Theatre - (Tues 20th to Sat 24th Oct) |
Dreams
of Violence is a new comedy directed by Max Stafford-Clark,
artistic director of Out of Joint, whose recent visits
to the Library include The Convict’s Opera and
The Overwhelming. Stella Feehily’s work for Out
of Joint includes O Go My Man and the Edinburgh Festival
smash-hit Duck. “Mum, I had a dream last night
where I threw you down the stairs. It’s not right”.
For Hildy (Catherine Russell), political activism comes
easier than dealing with her family life: her druggie
son; her philandering husband; and her father, misbehaving
in an expensive retirement home. Her mother (Paula Wilcox),
a charismatic 1960s pop star, clinging precariously
to her former beauty and a bottle of vodka, sets up
camp in Hildy’s spare room to belittle her. By
day, Hildy leads the City’s cleaners in revolt
against the bankers. By night, she dreams unsettling
acts of violence… Please note that the evening
performances on Friday's and Saturday's start at 8pm.
There is a 3pm matinee on the Thursday and Saturday. |
